Synchronicity Series The synchronicity series began as a few separate paintings. Usually I set a clear intention for what I want to know and the art work reveals the answers to my question(s). However, this series did not start out with any intention. I was simply painting anything to soothe myself. My inner and outer world had recently required me to adapt to major changes. I had gone through several expansions and shifts in my consciousness and we had moved to the edge of a small town, after living isolated in the country for eleven years. I was trying to find myself again, integrate, and adjust. Therefore the paintings were of seemingly unrelated subject matter. I was frustrated that it did not appear to be a series of anything consistent, but I held onto them and kept painting, sporadically. As my inner and outer life settled down a little, I suddenly realized that perhaps this was in fact a series I had been working on. What if there was an underlying question that I had been living that these paintings were answering. Instantly I knew the truth in this question. It was about synchronicity. Synchronicity was not a new term or experience to me, by any means. But what if there were more to it than I had previously been aware of? I fit the disparate paintings together as if they were puzzle pieces and I easily saw how they could be related by sharing a slight edge here or a continuing line there. What if synchronicities were in fact not isolated events, but rather a flow? What would happen if a person held their attention to this flow and followed it like a path? Of course I began living this experience simultaneously as the series was literally coming together. I found myself noticing what I was noticing in my environmentstreet signs, things people said, familiar images all around me I did find that not only could I follow flow to perfect timing and events for the manifestation of things I was asking for, but I began to anticipate what the next connection would be. What a fun way to be and live! Each individual painting is whole and complete in itself, and yet it is a necessary part of the larger series. Our individual lives are very much the same. We generally see ourselves as being separate and distinct, yet we are part of a larger wholeness, an interconnectedness that few dare to contemplate. Likewise, events and experiences in our lives usually seem to be separate from each other. And yet, from the right perspective we can see a rich underlying layer of meaning, interconnection and even specific patterns that could likely even be expressed or identified in the mathematics of geometry. The single paintings in this series are interconnected in multiple ways: (i.e., symbolically, repetition of shape and theme). These connections (except the overlapping edges where I intentionally continued a theme) occurred without my conscious awareness. The elephant, for example, is often a symbol of memory--thus relating to the "Remember" painting. The repetition of the tulips, cats, birds, and daisies was a surprise to me as these paintings were created over a few months and were not visible in the studio to me at the same time. This repetition gives continuity (literally, "flow" to the composite of the whole series. This new experience of witnessing and consciously participating in the flow of synchronicity allows me to be and see the Oneness of everything. I experience it not just as circular, but spherical in nature. The following poem bubbled up from the "Remember" painting. I feel that it still expresses the experience of the whole series as well. The poem describes how one seemingly unrelated thing leads to another thing and then to yet another thing until we are back at the beginning, so to speak, but with a more holistic view of that original intention/experience. Remember... If he hadn't gone
to the kitchen to get that lemon, If he hadn't
returned the sheep to his neighbor, As he walked back
home, reminiscing, Back to Synchronicity Series Paintings 2008 |
